SpeakeasyShorts 2015

SpeakeasyShorts is a new type of film competition — a collaboration between filmmakers and storytellers. Filmmaking teams have only 5 days to write, shoot, edit—and screen a film based on stories from eight local storytellers. The kicker: none of the teams had heard the stories before they were presented.

On November 13, filmmaking teams will discover which story they have been paired with — and have 5 days to create a short film (less than 8 minutes) based on a true tale. The films premier the following weekend (November 21) — and one team walks away with a $1,000 cash prize!

STORYTELLERS

Want to see your story made into a short film? Pitch us your story or idea. Keep in mind that not all stories can be turned into film easily. The best candidates will have a lot of action, a setting that can be filmed, characters that can be cast, drama, tension, and a strong narrative arc. If most of the story happens through your internal thoughts, it will be hard to film. If it takes place on a roller coaster, it will be hard to film. Get it? And you may pitch a story you’ve performed before.

FILMMAKERS:

  1. All film teams must apply to participate. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  2. Sixteen (16) teams will be selected to compete. Teams will be selected by October 11, 2015.
  3. All applications must include 3 samples of previous work in the form of vimeo.com links
  4. Two significant members of your team (Director, Writer, DP, Producer) must reside in Washington, DC at the time of competition.
